Charity Sewing Day with Karla Alexander- April 15, 2017

It's almost time for our annual charity sewing day, and our guest designer/instructor for this year will be Karla Alexander.  You may remember the fun we had when she instructed the charity event in 2015.  We made about 30 quilt tops that day!

This event is for members of the Westside Quilters Guild.  If you are not a member but would like more information about our charity sewing or about how to join the guild, join us as a guest at one of our meetings.  We'd love to meet you!

The charity sewing day will be on April 15, 2017, from 9-4 at the Jessie Mays Community Center in North Plains.  PLEASE SIGN UP WITH RUTH VOELKER so that we will know how to set up the room!  (There is no charge- but please sign up)

You can use your own fabric or arrange with Carolyn or Marcia to get fabric from the charity storage.  You don't have to pre-cut, but it would help you to complete your quilt on the sewing day if it is pre-cut.  Assembly instructions and tips will come from Karla at the sewing day.

Of course, the purpose of this event is to make lots and lots of charity quilts!  But there will be a few surprises for the quilters who attend on April 15th!  We hope to see you there!

Precutting for the Karla Alexander Charity Sew-in - April 15, 2017

The pattern we’ve chosen requires contrasting fabrics. Precutting involves cutting fabrics into two sizes of squares.  Your quilt could be scrappy with lights and darks (no mediums).  It could be two contrasting colors like red and black.  It could be a 3-color with two colors and a background (red, white and blue?). The 8 ½” squares will be cut/sewn into sub-units (instructions at the sew-in), but the 8” squares will remain whole, so a novelty/focus fabric could be used there. The tables below show the number of squares needed of each fabric depending on style and size.
You may choose to use/donate your own fabrics or arrangements can be made to visit the Charity storage unit to pick fabrics from our stash. Some kits will be available at the event.
We will be cutting kits at the March Charity Sewing day (3/13, 9:00-12:00) at the Springs at Tanasbourne (SE corner of NW 192nd and Cornell). If you’d like to help, bring a cutting mat, a rotary cutter, and ruler.
For those who cannot attend the Sew-in, but do want to participate, directions for Karla’s pattern will be made available shortly after the event.
